Where to buy candle wax, wicks and fragrance oil

Updated

On this page7

Buy from a supplier that publishes the documents you need to make the same candle twice: a data sheet or instructions for each wax with its melt point, temperatures and maximum fragrance load; a safety data sheet and an IFRA certificate for each fragrance oil; wick charts by container diameter; and lot numbers on what you receive. The directory below lists established suppliers by region, with what each one published when its pages were read in October 2026, and the wax and wick makers behind the products. A listing implies no endorsement, and a supplier's figures describe its own products, never a type of wax in general.

What to ask any supplier for

DocumentWhat it gives youWhy it matters
Wax data sheet or instructionsMelt point, melt and addition temperature, pour range, maximum fragrance load, cure before test burningEvery temperature and load on your batch record should trace to it; how to read one is on buying wax and reading a data sheet
Safety data sheet (SDS) for each fragrance oilHazards, first aid, flash point, storageOSHA's Hazard Communication Standard is the rule behind SDSs [1]; what each section means is on reading a fragrance oil safety data sheet
IFRA certificate for each fragrance oilThe most of that oil a candle can contain and conform to the IFRA StandardsCertificates come from the fragrance supplier, and IFRA states it "does not create the certificates" [2]; see IFRA certificates and fragrance limits
Wick chartCandidate wick sizes by container diameter and waxA starting range to test; CandleScience bases its recommendations on a 7.5 percent fragrance load and no dye [3]
Wick core statementWhether the wick has a metal coreMetal-cored wicks bring the lead rule's carton statement and a General Certificate of Conformity; nonmetal wicks bring neither [4]; see lead in wicks
Lot numbersWhich production run you receivedLets you trace a batch and decide when a new lot needs a confirmation burn (what has to be retested)

If a supplier cannot give you the wax figures or the oil documents, treat that as information about the supplier.

Wax, additive and wick manufacturers behind the products

Most makers buy from retailers rather than from the factory, but it helps to know who made what you are buying, because the maker's sheet is the one that governs.

Retail suppliers by region

Region is given only where a page read stated an address or a home country, showed prices in one currency, or the site uses a country domain. Each "publishes" entry lists what was found on the pages read on October 22, 2026, not everything the company offers.

Suppliers whose pages did not state a region

Northwood publishes a free downloadable wick chart, updated November 2023, and help articles on testing and flash point [21]. Makesy publishes a wood wick size chart, a wax-to-wick match-up and a video on reading an IFRA certificate; its site was set to U.S. dollars, but the page read did not say where it is based [15]. Wholesale Supplies Plus runs a help center whose fragrance load article is cited on how much fragrance oil to use; its page did not state where the company is based.

Vessels and lids

Glass jars, tins, ceramic vessels and lids come from container suppliers rather than candle supply houses, and many candle supply houses sell a range as well. For any vessel, ask for:

  • the inside diameter at the top and at the base, which sets the wick, and the height;
  • for glass, whether it is sold for use as a filled candle container. ASTM F2179-26 covers glass containers "that are produced for use as candle containers" and excludes votive holders, hurricanes and glass holders for freestanding candles [22]; what the standard covers and what to ask is on candle-safe glass;
  • for tins, what coating is inside and whether the seam is sealed;
  • the lot or production code on the case, so a jar problem can be traced;
  • lid fit with a trimmed wick standing above your fill line.

Ask the vessel supplier whether it publishes a temperature rating for candle use; without one, your burn test is how you learn whether a vessel holds up, as glass or tin explains.

Choosing between them

  • Start with one wax and the supplier that publishes its sheet. A first container candle needs one wax, one oil and the wicks that wax's chart suggests.
  • Buy wicks where the chart matches your wax. A chart written for another wax is a weaker starting point than one with a column for yours.
  • Check the oil's documents before the oil. An oil without an SDS and IFRA certificate is harder to sell candles with, however good it smells.
  • Compare landed cost. List price leaves out freight; shipping wax is heavy, and some oils have flash points that restrict how they ship; see flash point.
  • Keep one supplier per material while you test. Changing supplier is changing the candle.

Dated prices from two of these suppliers are on what it costs to start making candles.

Reading what arrives

The day an order arrives, file the data sheet, SDS and IFRA certificate with the lot numbers on the bags and bottles. Buying wax and reading a data sheet walks through a real wax sheet field by field.
