Case packing and shipping liquid

Updated

On this page5

The worst shipping proposition in the estate after glass: heavy, liquid, and sometimes classified.

Heavy, and it leaks

A liter weighs a kilogram, and a case of twelve is twelve kilograms before packaging.

And a leak is not a damaged unit, it is a damaged consignment: one bottle emptying into a carton ruins everything in it and often the parcels around it.

Packing a case

Upright, always, with dividers.

Induction-sealed, which is what actually stops leaks. A cap alone is not a seal.

Enough headspace that heat does not pressurize the closure.

A case weight a person can lift: a carton that is too heavy is refused by warehouses and hurts backs.

Batch code on the case, which is what makes a problem traceable without opening it.

Shipping to a customer

Double bag or bag the bottle inside the carton, so a leak is contained rather than distributed.

Immobilize: movement causes leaks more than impact does.

Dispatch early in the week in hot weather, so nothing sits in a depot over a weekend.

And photograph the packing method once, so a damage claim has evidence behind it.

When the product is regulated in transit

The item people miss. A flammable product, a corrosive one, or an oxidizer is hazardous material for transport purposes, governed by the DOT hazardous materials regulations.

That reaches packaging specification, marking, labeling, documentation and training, and it can mean a product cannot go by air or cannot go through an ordinary parcel service at all.

A strongly acidic or strongly alkaline cleaner is the common case, and it is a question to settle before building an online business around the product rather than after the first refused consignment.
