Getting a label to stay on

Updated

On this page5

Skincare labels have to survive a place no other product's label does: a warm, wet bathroom, handled with oily fingers, for a year.

Bathrooms are the hard environment

Steam, temperature swings, water running down the bottle, and the product itself on the customer's hands. A facestock that is fine on a pantry shelf will lift, wrinkle or go translucent in a shower room within weeks.

Which is why synthetic facestocks and water-resistant adhesives are the norm here, and why an uncoated paper label is a decision to look artisanal for a short time.

What actually makes them fail

Contamination at application. A trace of the formula on the container from filling, and the adhesive never bonds. Wipe every container before labeling.

Radius. A 30 ml serum bottle is a tight curve, and a stiff facestock will peel from the ends. Smaller bottles need more conformable material.

Temperature at application. Labeling a cold container, or packing immediately, before the adhesive has flowed and set.

The product itself. Oils and some actives will attack an inappropriate adhesive from the outside if the bottle is handled with them.

Small curves and full panels

The panel has to carry a statement of identity, the net quantity, the full ingredient declaration in INCI names in descending order, and your name and address. On a 30 ml bottle that is genuinely difficult and the ingredient list is usually the longest element.

Check the printable panel dimensions before ordering bottles. A design that does not fit is a bottle problem, and INCI names are not yours to abbreviate.

Ordering and applying

Specify facestock and adhesive for the actual container, the actual radius and a humid environment, and ask the printer for a sample applied to your bottle rather than a flat proof.

Then apply to clean, dry, room-temperature containers and let them sit a day before packing. Adhesive continues bonding for hours, and a case packed straight away is a case with loose edges.
