Making it for somebody else

Updated

On this page5

Private label in skincare is manufacturing under another brand's name: a clinic's own range, a salon's retail line, a retailer's own label. It is a different business alongside yours.

What you are selling

Capacity, capability and, increasingly, the documentation. A clinic wanting its own moisturizer does not want to commission a challenge test, a stability study and a safety assessment. You already have those for a formula.

Which means the thing you are actually selling is frequently the file rather than the mixing.

Why skincare suits it

Minimum viable runs are small compared with most manufacturing, shelf life is long enough to make a modest run practical, and there is a large population of clinics, spas and salons who want a branded product and have no interest in making one.

It also uses formulas you have already tested, which is where the economics work: the per-formula costs are already paid.

Who carries the safety obligation

Settle this in writing before the first run, because it is the clause that matters most and the one most often left vague.

Whose name appears as manufacturer, packer or distributor. Who holds the safety substantiation and maintains it. Who registers and lists under MoCRA. Who handles an adverse event report. And what happens if they make a claim about the product that you would not make, which can move a cosmetic into drug territory using your formula.

That last one is a real risk: their marketing, your manufacturing.

The dependency risk

Private label revenue concentrates. One client can become a large share of output and can leave, bring it in house, or sell the clinic.

Treat it as a supplement rather than a foundation, and keep building the brand with your own name on it. The margin is lower, the relationship is theirs to end, and the customer is not yours.
