Is this for you at all

Skincare has the most attractive margins of any craft product and the highest hidden obligations. Both facts are usually discovered in the wrong order.
What the business actually is
You are manufacturing a product that goes on people's faces, sold on claims that are regulated, kept safe by a system you have to design and prove. The cooking part is genuinely easy. The evidence part is the business.
Brands that succeed here treat themselves as small manufacturers. Brands that struggle treat themselves as makers who happen to sell.
The obligation people do not expect
A cosmetic must be substantiated as safe for its intended use, and safety substantiation has no small-business exemption. MoCRA's exemptions cover facility registration and product listing, which are the paperwork, not the substance.
And an SPF or a therapeutic claim moves the product into OTC drug territory where no exemption applies at all.
None of that is a reason not to do this. It is a reason to know what you are taking on before ordering a thousand bottles.
What you need to enjoy
Precision, because a formula is a percentage composition and a preservative at the wrong level is a safety problem. Documentation, because consistency and traceability are the product. And patience, because a challenge test takes twenty-eight days and stability takes months, which means launching a new product is a quarter rather than a weekend.
Who should start somewhere else
Anyone unwilling to pay for testing. The cost is a few hundred dollars per formula and there is no honest version of this business without it.
Anyone who wants to launch twelve products. Each formula carries its own testing, so a large range at launch is a large bill and a large surface of risk.
And anyone drawn to the marketing rather than the manufacturing, because the claims are the most regulated part and the temptation to overstate is exactly where small brands get into trouble.
If that reads as discouraging, the honest counterweight is that starting anhydrous: an oil, a balm, removes almost all of it while you learn the rest.
