Time your own process before buying anything, and the answer will not be what you expected.

Buy against measured hours

Minutes per specimen for cleaning, for cataloguing, for photography, for housing.

Then spend against the largest number, which is almost never the field equipment people want to upgrade.

A photography setup

Usually the highest-return purchase for anybody selling online.

A fixed setup, stand, lights, background, scale in frame, turns five minutes per specimen into one, and makes every photograph consistent, which is what makes a listing page look professional.

Consistency is worth more than quality here. A page of specimens shot the same way sells better than a page of individually better photographs that do not match.

Preparation equipment

A hydraulic trimmer, which is controlled and predictable where a hammer is not.

An ultrasonic cleaner, useful and dangerous to fragile material.

An air abrasive unit, which is a specialist tool and the point at which preparation becomes a skill of its own.

All of them repay themselves only at volume, and all of them can destroy a specimen faster than a hammer can.

Environment

The purchase that protects everything else: a dehumidifier or humidity control for the storage room, and a hygrometer to know whether it is working.

Metal cabinets, or sealing the wooden ones.

It is unglamorous, nobody sees it, and it is the difference between a collection that is worth something in twenty years and one that is not.
