What goes wrong

The label was recreated from memory

Updated

On this page14
Four of the five identify a transaction. Those cannot be remembered.

The directions were copied and nothing else

Which is the half a patient uses. The other four items identify the dispenser, the prescription and the prescriber.

And those are transaction records

A serial number and a date, an address, a prescriber name. None of them is recoverable from looking at the tablets.

The exemption was read as a status

It is conditional. Exempt from the requirements of section 352 if the drug bears a label containing the five items.

So moving the tablets was treated as a storage decision

Physically it is. The paragraph quoted here makes the label a condition, and the label stays on the bottle.

This property does not say what follows from that

Nothing here states whether decanting is permitted or what a patient may do with their own medication. The mechanism is the content.

The exclusions were skipped

The paragraph excludes drugs dispensed through mail-order diagnosis and drugs dispensed in violation of the prescription requirements, and the full set is in the statute.

Section 352 was assumed to be short

It is the misbranding section and the exemption is from its requirements with stated exceptions. None of it is set out here.

A supplement was treated the same way

Three of the six leaves are not prescription drugs, so there is no conditional exemption to forfeit and the analysis is different.

Controlled substances were assumed to follow the same rule

They have their own scheme, not addressed anywhere on these pages.

And travel rules were assumed to be federal drug law

Airline and security screening requirements are neither, and they are a separate research problem.

The container was expected to help

It cannot. No container we sell carries a dispenser name, a serial number or a prescriber, and no choice of jar changes that.

And the dispensed bottle was thrown away

Which is the practical version of the problem. The four transaction items exist in exactly one place, and once that container is gone they are not reconstructable.

Read the paragraph, then ask a pharmacist

Which is the honest end of it. The text is quoted and linked so the reading can start from the source.

21 U.S.C. 353(b)(2). A drug dispensed by filling or refilling a written or oral prescription is exempt from the requirements of section 352 of the title, subject to stated exceptions, if the drug bears a label containing "the name and address of the dispenser, the serial number and date of the prescription or of its filling, the name of the prescriber, and, if stated in the prescription, the name of the patient, and the directions for use and cautionary statements, if any, contained in such prescription." The paragraph also excludes drugs dispensed through mail-order diagnosis and drugs dispensed in violation of the prescription requirements; those exclusions are described rather than quoted here, and the full set of exceptions is in the statute. Nothing on these pages says whether decanting a dispensed prescription is permitted. law.cornell.edu
The Davis Pack Supply catalog, searched catalog-wide on 19 October 2026. The only compartmented, hinged or vial articles in the entire catalog are 3 glass vials at 1.8 to 3.7 mL, 2 polypropylene hinged containers at 7.4 mL and 1 phenolic hinged container. None of the six is a multi-compartment pill organizer. The 2 polypropylene hinged containers are indexed to the aromatherapy group rather than to this one, which has a pill organizer leaf.
Written from 21 U.S.C. 353(b)(2) and from the catalog as it stood on 19 October 2026. Nothing here says whether decanting a dispensed prescription is permitted, or what a patient may do with their own medication; the point is that the exemption in that paragraph is conditional on a label the dispensed container carries. Airline and security screening rules are not federal drug law and are not addressed. The pocket threshold used on these pages, 3 inches in height and 1.8 inches in diameter, is a figure this property chose and not a standard. There is no multi-compartment pill organizer anywhere in this catalog.
