The five items

Three parties on one label

Updated

On this page15
The label identifies who filled it, who ordered it and who it is for.

The dispenser is named with an address

Not just a name. The name and address of the dispenser, which makes the filling traceable to a place.

The prescriber is named without one

The name of the prescriber, and nothing about an address. The asymmetry is in the text.

And the patient is named conditionally

If stated in the prescription. So the label follows the prescription rather than independently requiring identification.

Which means three parties appear and only one is located

A detail worth noticing, because it tells you what the label is for: tracing the filling, not the prescribing.

The serial number does similar work

The serial number and date of the prescription or of its filling, which ties the container to a specific transaction at that dispenser.

So the label is an identifier as much as an instruction

Four of the five items identify a transaction and its parties. One, the directions, tells the patient what to do.

And none of the four survives a transfer

Tip the tablets into another container and the transaction identifiers are on the bottle you left behind.

The directions are the one people copy

Which is the half a patient actually uses, and copying it does not bring the other four with it.

This property makes no claim about that practice

What a patient may do with their own medication is not a question a container catalog answers. The mechanism is what is set out here.

Nor about controlled substances

Which have their own scheme entirely, not addressed anywhere on these pages.

Nor about screening or travel rules

Airline and security requirements are not federal drug law and are a different research problem.

And the address is the one item with two parts

Name and address of the dispenser, where every other party is named alone. On a small cylindrical label an address is several lines, which is a large share of the available area.

Which is part of why dispensed bottles are the size they are

The shelf median here is 150 mL at 3.95 inches tall, and 61 of 94 containers are packer bottles. The format accommodates a dense wrapped label.

What is here is the structure

An exemption conditional on a label, five items, and the fact that a container choice cannot supply any of them.

21 U.S.C. 353(b)(2). A drug dispensed by filling or refilling a written or oral prescription is exempt from the requirements of section 352 of the title, subject to stated exceptions, if the drug bears a label containing "the name and address of the dispenser, the serial number and date of the prescription or of its filling, the name of the prescriber, and, if stated in the prescription, the name of the patient, and the directions for use and cautionary statements, if any, contained in such prescription." The paragraph also excludes drugs dispensed through mail-order diagnosis and drugs dispensed in violation of the prescription requirements; those exclusions are described rather than quoted here, and the full set of exceptions is in the statute. Nothing on these pages says whether decanting a dispensed prescription is permitted. law.cornell.edu
Written from 21 U.S.C. 353(b)(2) and from the catalog as it stood on 19 October 2026. Nothing here says whether decanting a dispensed prescription is permitted, or what a patient may do with their own medication; the point is that the exemption in that paragraph is conditional on a label the dispensed container carries. Airline and security screening rules are not federal drug law and are not addressed. The pocket threshold used on these pages, 3 inches in height and 1.8 inches in diameter, is a figure this property chose and not a standard. There is no multi-compartment pill organizer anywhere in this catalog.
