Is a lip balm business for you

Updated

On this page5

Lip balm is often started and most commonly abandoned product in handmade personal care, and the reasons are structural rather than personal.

What the product is good at

Low entry cost. A pot, a thermometer, a scale and a box of tubes.

Fast to make. A batch is an hour, not a fermentation.

Ships in an envelope, keeps without refrigeration, and sells on impulse at a price nobody thinks about.

And it is anhydrous, which removes the whole preservation problem that dominates cream and lotion.

What it is bad at

The price ceiling is low and set by products made by the million. A few dollars is what the category anchors at.

Which means the unit margin is small in absolute terms, and the business is a volume business at a scale that is awkward for one person: thousands of units, each hand-filled, hand-labeled and hand-capped.

It is also the most crowded table at any market. Everyone makes lip balm.

Who does well at it

People for whom it is the second product, alongside something with a higher unit price, where the balm is the impulse item that completes a basket.

People with a genuine material story, their own beeswax, a specific botanical, because that is the only differentiator the category reliably rewards.

And people selling wholesale into enough accounts to make the volume worth the process, which is a different business from a market stall.

The thing to decide first

Cosmetic or drug. It is not a detail to resolve later: it decides your label, your registration obligations, your manufacturing standard and a large part of your cost.

People often should decide to stay a cosmetic, deliberately and in writing, and build everything from there.
