Not zero

A defined term

On this page16
Free does not mean none.

The statute is defining a term

Lead free, for the purposes of the Act, means the two things the definition says. The ordinary meaning is not the operative one.

Which is a common shape and an uncommonly stark example

Because free reads as absolute in a way that most defined terms do not.

And the figures are small enough to look like zero

0.2 and 0.25 percent. Which is two parts in a thousand, and is not two parts in nothing.

So a lead free fitting contains lead

Within the threshold, and the threshold is what the term means.

This library has two other examples of the same shape

A spice is not a spice if its volatile oil has been removed, and garlic is excluded from the definition entirely because it is traditionally regarded as a food.

And new dietary ingredient means not marketed before a date

Rather than recently discovered, which the adjacent botanicals property sets out.

Three terms, three plain senses, all wrong

Which is the argument for quoting a definition rather than summarizing one.

And this definition is two sentences long

Short enough that there is no excuse for paraphrasing it, and that is why both halves are quoted here.

The scope is a separate matter again

What the Act prohibits, where it applies, the exemptions and the effective dates are all outside this property.

So the definition is quoted and the obligation is not

Which is deliberate: the definition is the part with the surprise in it.

And nothing here determines whether any article is lead free

That is a measurement and a computation about a specific assembly, and neither is performed on these pages.

Nor whether any requirement reaches any article

Which depends on what the article is for and where it is installed.

And the figures have changed over time

Which is a further reason not to work from memory. This property quotes the current text and does not describe its history.

Nor does it say which version applies to anything installed

An existing installation and a new one are different questions, and neither is answered here.

Read the two sentences, then ask somebody who knows the scheme

Which is the honest end of a two-sentence spine.

42 U.S.C. 300g-6(d), the definition of lead free. For solder and flux, "not containing more than 0.2 percent lead". For pipes and fittings, "not more than a weighted average of 0.25 percent lead when used with respect to the wetted surfaces of pipes, pipe fittings, plumbing fittings, and fixtures." This is a definition from the Safe Drinking Water Act; nothing on these pages describes what the Act prohibits, where it applies, the exemptions, the certification or the effective dates, or determines whether any article is lead free. law.cornell.edu
Written from 42 U.S.C. 300g-6(d) and from the catalog as it stood on 19 October 2026. That is a definition from the Safe Drinking Water Act and nothing here describes what the Act prohibits, where it applies, the exemptions, the certification or the effective dates, or determines whether any article is lead free. A weighted average over wetted surfaces is computed for a particular assembly and no computation is performed here. This shelf is shared identically by nine groups and the sewing notions property enumerates the inventory.
