What goes wrong

The lot was assumed to survive

On this page14
Identical bolts, and no longer a lot.

Two bags of the same part number were combined

Which is the ordinary thing to do with a half-empty jar, and it breaks the lot if the heat numbers differ.

Because a lot is one coil or heat number

As provided by the metal manufacturer. Same part number and same process are not enough on their own.

And nothing about the fasteners changed

Which is why it is easy to do. There is no visible difference and no defect.

The heat number was on the bag

And the bag was discarded. Which is the information loss, and it is the same mechanism the travel medication property finds with a dispensed label.

A large jar invited it

Our shelf runs to 500 mL with a median of 177. A half-empty jar is an invitation to top up.

The grade mark was read as covering the jar

It purports to indicate that the lot conforms to a standard. Each bolt speaks for its own lot, and in a mixed jar those are no longer identifiable.

The brand was read as the grade mark

The definition expressly excludes a manufacturer's insignia and a part number. The grade mark is the radial lines or the class symbol.

A label was expected from us

We publish no lot field, no heat number and no marking service. The identifier is the buyer's to apply.

And a case was bought before the lots were counted

One lot per container means more containers, and 65 of the 251 are full case only with case packs to 6,370.

Nothing here says what follows from a broken lot

What the Act requires of whom is not described on these pages. The definition is, and the definition is what a jar can break.

Label at fill time, one lot per jar

Which is the whole discipline and it costs a pen.

And keep the bag until the label is on

Because the number only exists in one place until somebody writes it down.

Which is the cheapest possible control

And the one nobody does.

15 U.S.C. 5402(10) defines a lot as "a quantity of fasteners of one part number fabricated by the same production process from the same coil or heat number of metal as provided by the metal manufacturer". law.cornell.edu
15 U.S.C. 5402(8) defines a grade identification marking as "any grade-mark or property class symbol appearing on a fastener purporting to indicate that the lot of fasteners conforms to a specific consensus standard, but such term does not include a manufacturer's insignia or part number". law.cornell.edu
The Davis Pack Supply catalog, measured 19 October 2026 across the 251 containers on this shelf. The specification labels we publish and their coverage: Material on 251 of 251, Color on 251, Capacity on 251, Temperature range on 251, Case pack on 250, Height on 237, Neck finish on 232, Recyclable on 117, Width on 18, and Liner on 1. None of the ten is a lot number: there is no lot, heat number, coil reference or production date anywhere in our data, for the container or for anything in it. We identify a product by a dc sku and a case pack.
Written from 15 U.S.C. 5402 and from the catalog as it stood on 19 October 2026. These are definitions from the Fastener Quality Act and nothing here describes what the Act requires of anyone, the inspection or certification scheme, the exemptions, or which consensus standards are involved. Nothing determines whether any article is a fastener within the definition or whether any quantity is a lot. We publish no lot number, heat number, coil reference or production date anywhere in our data. This shelf is shared identically by nine groups and the sewing notions property enumerates the inventory.
