A lot is one heat of steel
On this page14
There is a federal act about fasteners
With its own definitions section, and three of those definitions are directly about what a container can do.
The definition of a lot
A quantity of fasteners of one part number fabricated by the same production process from the same coil or heat number of metal as provided by the metal manufacturer.
Three conditions, and the third is the interesting one
One part number. One production process. And the same coil or heat number of metal.
So a lot is defined by material provenance
Not by a production run and not by a date. By which batch of steel it came from, as provided by the metal manufacturer.
Which is further upstream than people expect
The definition reaches past the fastener maker to the mill, and names the mill as the source of the heat number.
And it makes the container part of the definition
Tip two heat numbers into one jar and what is in the jar is no longer a lot. The fasteners are unchanged.
No tool, no modification, no intent
Which is the finding, and it is the same shape as the travel medication property: an act that requires nothing and changes a legal status.
The difference is what is lost
There a label stayed behind on a bottle. Here a traceability chain is broken by combining two things that were each fine.
So a small parts jar can destroy a lot
Which is worth knowing on a shelf of 210 jars, and it is not a container quality problem at all.
Then the second definition, which has a floor
A fastener has a nominal diameter of 6 millimetres or greater, or a quarter inch or greater. Below that an article is not a fastener for this Act.
And the third, which excludes the brand
A grade identification marking does not include a manufacturer's insignia or part number. The grade mark is the mark.
Three definitions and three findings
A lot broken by mixing, a floor below which the Act does not reach, and a mark that is not the brand.
And our own position, which is a blank
We publish ten specification fields and not one of them is a lot number, heat number, coil reference or production date.
