The mark

Not the brand

On this page14
"does not include a manufacturer's insignia or part number."

The definition

Any grade-mark or property class symbol appearing on a fastener purporting to indicate that the lot of fasteners conforms to a specific consensus standard, but such term does not include a manufacturer's insignia or part number.

So the brand on a bolt head is not it

Which is the surprise, because the maker's mark is the most visible thing on a bolt head and it is expressly excluded.

Nor is the part number

Also excluded by name. Two of the three things typically stamped on a fastener are outside the definition.

What is included is a grade-mark or property class symbol

The radial lines, the numerals, the class designation. The thing that claims conformity to a standard.

And the claim is about the lot

Purporting to indicate that the LOT of fasteners conforms to a specific consensus standard. So the mark on one bolt speaks for the lot.

Which closes the circle with the lot definition

A grade mark is a claim about a quantity traceable to one heat of metal. Mix two heats and the mark on each bolt still refers to its own lot.

So a mixed jar of grade marked bolts is a mixed set of claims

Each bolt carries a mark about a lot that can no longer be identified, which is why the mixing matters.

Purporting is the verb

Not certifying, not proving. A mark purporting to indicate conformity, which is a claim rather than a guarantee.

And a specific consensus standard is the reference

Which standards those are is not described here, and the definition does not enumerate them.

The exclusion of the insignia has a logic

A brand says who made it and a grade mark says what it is. Only the second is a conformity claim.

Which is the same distinction the electrical property draws

There a country of origin mark identifies where an article came from, and it is not a performance claim either.

Three kinds of mark on one bolt head

A brand, a part number and a grade mark, and only one of the three is the subject of this definition.

Read the grade mark, and know it speaks for a lot

Which is the whole of it, and the lot is the thing a container can break.

15 U.S.C. 5402(8) defines a grade identification marking as "any grade-mark or property class symbol appearing on a fastener purporting to indicate that the lot of fasteners conforms to a specific consensus standard, but such term does not include a manufacturer's insignia or part number". law.cornell.edu
15 U.S.C. 5402(10) defines a lot as "a quantity of fasteners of one part number fabricated by the same production process from the same coil or heat number of metal as provided by the metal manufacturer". law.cornell.edu
Written from 15 U.S.C. 5402 and from the catalog as it stood on 19 October 2026. These are definitions from the Fastener Quality Act and nothing here describes what the Act requires of anyone, the inspection or certification scheme, the exemptions, or which consensus standards are involved. Nothing determines whether any article is a fastener within the definition or whether any quantity is a lot. We publish no lot number, heat number, coil reference or production date anywhere in our data. This shelf is shared identically by nine groups and the sewing notions property enumerates the inventory.
