Four conditions
On this page15
One, the article type
A metallic screw, nut, bolt or stud having internal or external threads, or a load-indicating washer. Five named kinds and nothing else.
Which excludes the unthreaded
Cotter pins, rivets, staples, brads and finish nails have no thread, and four of them are named articles in this group.
And excludes ordinary washers
Because the definition names a load-indicating washer specifically, which implies the others are out.
Two, the diameter
6 millimetres or greater in metric terms, or a quarter inch or greater in English terms. Nominal diameter, not length.
Three, through-hardening
That is through-hardened, or represented as meeting a consensus standard that calls for through-hardening.
Which has an or in it
So a representation about a standard counts, not only the physical fact. An article represented as meeting such a standard is caught.
Four, grade identification marking
That is grade identification marked, or represented as meeting a consensus standard that requires grade identification marking.
Which has the same or structure
Marked, or represented as meeting a standard that requires marking. Two routes into the condition.
So two of the four conditions can be met by representation
Which means what is said about an article can bring it inside the definition, independently of what it is.
That is the same shape as several spines in this library
The adjacent botanicals property finds a label as an element of a definition, and the cannabis topicals property finds claims deciding which labeling scheme applies.
Here a representation is a route into two conditions
Which makes the catalogue copy part of the analysis, not just the hardware.
And none of it is determined on these pages
Whether any article is a fastener within the definition is a question about that article and what is said about it.
And the marking condition is circular in a useful way
A fastener is one that is grade identification marked, and a grade identification marking is defined separately in the same section. The two definitions depend on each other.
Four conditions, two of them reachable by words
Which is the most useful summary of the definition.
