As the nature of the article will permit

Three adverbs and a qualifier
As legibly, indelibly, and permanently as the nature of the article or container will permit.
Legibly
Readable by the ultimate purchaser the statute names, in English. Which is a function of size, contrast and the surface it sits on.
Indelibly
Not removable. Which rules out a mark that rubs off, and on a handled component that is most printing.
Permanently
Which is adjacent to indelibly and not the same. A mark can be indelible and sit on something that falls off.
And then the qualifier bends all three
As the nature of the article or container will permit. So a small article is held to what a small article allows.
Which is a proportional standard
And there are very few of them in this library. Most requirements here are a fixed figure or a fixed sentence.
The sharpest contrast is the cosmetic warning
The cannabis topicals property quotes a 1/16 inch minimum letter height that does not bend for a small package, where the only relief is petitioning for an amendment to the regulation.
Same problem, opposite drafting
One rule accommodates a small object by its own terms and the other does not accommodate it at all.
Which is the useful lesson
Read whether a standard has a proportionality clause before assuming either flexibility or rigidity.
And the qualifier applies to the container too
The nature of the article or container will permit. So a container marking is held to what that container allows.
Which makes the surface a compliance variable
A mark on glass and a mark on polypropylene are different marks with different permanence.
Our shelf is 117 PET, 78 PP and 56 glass
Three surfaces, three marking processes, and no metal or polyethylene at all.
So the material choice is part of the marking decision
Which is unusual, and it is why this property's shelf axis is the material mix.
