We publish half the equation
On this page11
The definition is arithmetic
Slack-fill is the difference between the actual capacity of a container and the volume of product contained therein. Two numbers and one subtraction.
And the first number is ours
Our capacity field is the actual capacity of the container, published in millilitres on 37 of the 39 containers in this group.
Which is unusually direct
Most spines in this library ask for something we do not hold: a mark, a fill weight, a character width, a sterility certificate. This one asks for the field the whole catalog is built on.
The second number is yours
The volume of product contained therein is a property of what you are packing, and we publish no fill volume and no fill weight.
So the honest division is clean
We give you the capacity, you measure the fill, and the difference is the slack-fill. Then the question is whether it is functional.
And the trigger condition fits this shelf
The paragraph reaches a container that does not allow the consumer to fully view its contents. 32 of our 39 are white, natural, blue or black against 7 clear.
Which is the ordinary condition of a pet food container
A pail or a tub of kibble or treats is opaque because opaque is cheap and protective. So the slack-fill test is live on almost all of this shelf.
A clear container is treated differently
The paragraph attaches its test to containers the consumer cannot see into, which is why our 7 clear containers sit outside the condition as written.
The empty space is not automatically a problem
There are six stated reasons it can be functional, and one of them is about fitting the label the law requires. That has its own section.
Read the capacity, measure the fill, check the six
Three steps, and we can only help with the first. Which is more than we can usually say.
