Getting started

Two halves of one bench

On this page11
One archetype describes half this craft. The shelf quietly disagreed with it and was right.

The chemistry half

Pickle solution and patina solution. Acidic, reactive, kept warm in the case of pickle, and the half the archetype was written for: chemical resistance is the entire decision.

The metal half

Casting grain, jewelry solder and wire stock. Dry, heavy, valuable and sorted by alloy and gauge. Nothing about a resin chart applies to them.

And polishing compound between

A waxy solid on a bar or in a tub, greasy, and it picks up grit that then scratches everything it touches. A lidded tub rather than a bottle.

The archetype says narrow mouth

And 224 of the 286 containers on this shelf are jars. Four of the six leaves are solids that need a hand or a scoop, and the shelf arrived with the right format despite the rule.

Which is worth noting because it is the reverse of usual

In most properties here the archetype is right and the shelf drifts. In this one the archetype is describing a chemical store and the shelf describes a bench.

The regulated question is about neither

It is about what you stamp on the finished piece, and on the box you sell it in. That is the National Gold and Silver Stamping Act and it is the spine of this property.

Which is unusual for a packaging catalog to be able to say

The statute names boxes, packages, covers and wrappers in its prohibition. A rule that reaches the packaging directly is rare enough to build a property on.

And the tolerance reaches a leaf

Gold fineness may diverge from the mark by a set amount, and the statute allows more for the whole article including solder. Solder is one of the six leaves, and the allowance exists because solder dilutes.

The real shelf gap is at the small end

The archetype window starts at 100 mL and 12 containers are 30 mL or under. Gold scrap, solder snippets and findings live in very small quantities.

Read the mark and the box sections before the containers one

Because what you print on a box is a statutory question, and what you keep pickle in is a chemistry one. Only one of them has a penalty attached.

References

The archetype behind this shelf is ind-chemical: 100 to 20,000 mL, narrow mouth, HDPE and glass, light sensitive, child resistant, poured, with "chemical resistance is the entire decision, check the resin chart first" as its stated reason. It describes the pickle and patina half of the craft and not the metal half, and the shelf disagrees with it: 224 of 286 containers are jars.
The Davis Pack Supply catalog, measured 19 October 2026. The jewelry metalwork shelf is 617 rows: 286 containers and 331 closures. 15 mL to 9,464 mL with a median of 237; 12 containers at 30 mL or under, 104 at 120 or under, 214 at a pint or under. 117 PET, 80 PP, 50 glass, 38 HDPE. 224 jars, 41 bottles, 19 tubs and pails, 1 jug, 1 tube. 89 clear, 74 white, 39 natural, 30 amber, 26 black. Closures: 248 continuous thread, 22 dome lids, 18 lug and twist, 12 child resistant, 10 round tubs, 9 liners and sealing discs, 5 phenolic, 5 specialty.
15 U.S.C. 297(a), National Gold and Silver Stamping Act. On a plated article, "no such article, nor any tag, card, or label attached thereto, nor any box, package, cover, or wrapper in which such article is incased or inclosed, shall be stamped, branded, engraved, or imprinted with the word 'sterling' or the word 'coin'". The section also prohibits marking a plated article with a fineness indication unless accompanied by wording identifying it as rolled gold plate, gold plate, gold electroplate or gold filled. law.cornell.edu
Written from 15 U.S.C. 295 and 297, and from the catalog as it stood on 19 October 2026. Silver tolerances at 15 U.S.C. 296 were not read for this property and are not summarized. The FTC Jewelry Guides at 16 CFR part 23 govern how jewelry is described and are a separate body of rules. Pickle and patina chemistry is a safety data sheet question and no handling advice is given here.
