What sits around a regulated shipment

On this page13
Not everything in a chemical store is specification packaging.

Absorbent and spill materials

Granular absorbent, pads and socks, kept near where a release might happen. Bulk containers, opened often, no certification involved.

Decanted working quantities

A chemical store that draws from a drum into a working container is doing something the shop consumables property covers in full, including the container size limits by material in Table H-12.

Sample and retain containers

Quality retains and samples taken from a batch, which are not being shipped and are not specification packaging. The field sampling property covers what a container does to a sample.

Waste collection before it is shipped

Which becomes a regulated shipment at some point and is not one while it sits in a laboratory. Where that line is depends on rules this property does not address.

And the general stores of a facility

Cleaning chemistry, lubricants, maintenance supplies. Ordinary containers in a facility that also ships hazardous materials.

This is where a general catalog belongs

76 containers, all polyolefin, mostly large. For the unregulated half of a regulated operation that is a coherent small offering.

The F style bottle is the useful shape

9 of them. Square in plan, stackable, and the traditional format for a carried or stored chemical.

And the pails carry the bulk

9 plastic round pails and 9 PP round tubs, with 10 tub and pail lids. For absorbent and for bulk granular material that is the format.

White and natural dominate

46 white and 23 natural against 2 clear. Which suits an industrial store and is unhelpful for anything you want to see the level of.

Natural polyethylene is the practical compromise

23 of them against 2 clear. Natural lets a level show through without being transparent, which is as much visibility as an industrial store usually needs and more than white gives.

Buy the stores and the shipping packaging separately

Different suppliers, different questions, different documentation. Treating them as one purchase is how an unmarked container ends up on a pallet.

Know which side of the line you are on

Shipping a regulated material means specification packaging from a certifying supplier. Everything else in the building is an ordinary container purchase.

The Davis Pack Supply catalog, measured 19 October 2026. The hazmat shelf is 310 rows: 76 containers and 234 closures, the smallest container count of any property in this library. 500 mL to 18,927 mL with a median of 2,514; 65 containers over a quart, 34 over a gallon and 6 at five gallons. 60 HDPE, 14 PP, 2 LDPE, and no glass, PET or steel. 30 tubs and pails, 23 bottles, 12 jars, 11 jugs. 46 white, 23 natural, 4 black, 2 clear. Closures: 175 continuous thread, 12 child resistant, 11 round tubs, 10 dome lids, 10 tub and pail lids, 5 flip top, 3 liners and sealing discs, 3 spouted, 2 phenolic.
Our catalog records material, capacity, neck finish, dimensions and case pack. It does NOT record whether a container carries a UN specification mark, which is the attribute that defines the product two of this group's four leaves describe. Nothing here is offered as UN specification packaging and nothing here should be assumed to be.
Written from 49 CFR 178.503 and from the catalog as it stood on 19 October 2026. No specimen UN mark appears here, because the regulation gives its examples as images rather than as text. Nothing in this catalog is offered as UN specification packaging: we do not record whether a container carries a mark, and the mark belongs to a tested design type and is applied by its manufacturer. Packing group determinations, shipping names and documentation are the shipper's.
