Selling changes everything

On this page13
Three leaves are things people start selling.

Dried fruit, nut storage and pet treat home

All three are household storage leaves and all three are things that turn into a market stall.

And the moment they do, the rule arrives

A food in package form shall bear a declaration of the net quantity of contents on its principal display panel.

In weight, for a solid

Which all ten leaves are. So the term is determined and the unit is the avoirdupois pound and ounce.

And our capacity field will not supply it

A volume in millilitres is not a weight. The specialty supplements property sets out that gap and the one measurement that closes it.

So weigh a filled container once

Per product and per size. It gives a declared weight and it is the number the label needs.

The formatting rules are a separate body of work

Type size, placement and the proportion of the panel, none of which is described here. Five other properties in this library cover type size rules of other kinds.

And state weights and measures law inspects it

Which is a state function and is what actually checks a declared quantity at retail. Not described here either.

Food contact is the other thing that arrives

A container for a food sold to somebody else raises the resin question, which the prepared food property covers: food grade is about the resin rather than the cleanliness.

Our material field is the start of that

20 HDPE, 7 PET and 2 glass on this shelf. Which names the resin family and not the specific grade.

So three things change at once

A declaration, a resin question and an inspection regime. The container stays the same.

Which is worth knowing before the first market

Because the container is bought for the cupboard and then used for the stall.

And the case packs here make that easy

Only 4 of 29 are full case only, with case packs from 16 to 600 and a median of 80. A small run is buyable.

21 CFR 101.7(a): "The principal display panel of a food in package form shall bear a declaration of the net quantity of contents." The declaration may be expressed in weight, measure, numerical count, or a combination of numerical count and weight or measure, and the choice is governed: fluid measure for a liquid, weight for a solid, semisolid or viscous food, with dry measure permitted for a fresh produce item customarily sold that way. The section reaches a food in package form, meaning a package for sale. law.cornell.edu
The Davis Pack Supply catalog, measured 19 October 2026. 178 rows: 29 containers and 149 closures, which is one of the smallest container counts in this library and a closure ratio of better than five to one. 950 to 7,571 mL with a median of 2,514, and nothing under a quart. 20 HDPE, 7 PET and 2 glass. 12 jars, 9 bottles, 8 tubs and pails. 5 PE wide mouth containers, 4 HDPE round tubs with handle, 4 plastic square grip containers, 3 plastic round pails, 3 HDPE single wall canisters, 2 PET wide mouth containers. 14 white, 9 clear, 5 natural, 1 black. Necks: 9 at 110-400, 8 unrecorded, 5 at 120TT, 2 each at 48-400 and 53-400, and singles at 110-405, 89-400 and 120-400. Closures: 110 continuous thread polypropylene lids, 16 metal or aluminum CT caps, 10 dome lids, 5 round tub lids, 3 plastic round pail lids, 3 sealing discs, 1 metal lug or twist cap, 1 metal overshell lid. Buyability, a snapshot: 20 of 29 available, 9 not; 9 quote only; 4 full case only, with case packs from 16 to 600 and a median of 80.
Written from 21 CFR 101.7 and from the catalog as it stood on 19 October 2026. That section reaches a food in package form, meaning a package for sale, so almost none of it reaches somebody filling a pantry canister; it is quoted because the four permitted terms and the 231 cubic inch gallon are worth knowing and because it shows what changes when a jar is sold rather than filled. The mass against volume gap is set out in the specialty supplements property. Nothing here addresses net quantity formatting, type size, placement, metric declarations, or state weights and measures law.
