Four terms, and a rule that does not reach you
On this page13
The requirement
The principal display panel of a food in package form shall bear a declaration of the net quantity of contents.
And four permitted terms
Weight, measure, numerical count, or a combination of numerical count and weight or measure.
Numerical count is the surprise
A quantity declared as a number of things rather than as an amount, which suits a bulk dry product sold by the piece.
But the choice is not free
Fluid measure for a liquid. Weight for a solid, semisolid or viscous food. Dry measure permitted for a fresh produce item customarily sold that way.
So the product decides the unit
Which is the opposite of how people usually think about it. The term is not a presentation choice.
And a food in package form means a package for sale
Which this group is not. Every leaf here is a household storing something it already owns.
So the section reaches almost nobody in this group
Nobody filling a flour canister is declaring a net quantity to anybody. Stated first, because the rest of the property quotes a rule that may not apply to the reader.
Why quote it at all
Because the units are defined in it, the gallon is 231 cubic inches, and a declared volume carries a temperature. Those are worth knowing.
And because the moment a jar is sold it changes
A household that starts selling jars of granola is in package form, and the four terms and the unit rules arrive together.
The mass against volume gap is elsewhere
A solid is declared by weight and our capacity field is a volume. The specialty supplements property works that through and this one points at it.
What this property has instead is the mouth
14 of the 29 containers are on a finish of 110 mm or wider and 8 more close with a lid across their full diameter.
Which makes it the widest-mouth shelf in the library
And that is the right answer for a canister you reach into rather than pour from.
