Word for word
On this page15
The statements are given as text
Each one a complete sentence with its own punctuation, capitalization and abbreviation.
Including the abbreviation
Not for children under 3 yrs. With yrs abbreviated and a full stop, which is how the section prints it.
And the dash
CHOKING HAZARD followed by a dash and then the hazard. The structure is the same across five of the six.
So a paraphrase is not compliance
Conveying the same information in different words is not what a prescribed statement asks for.
Which is the same shape as the alcohol warning
The beer property quotes a 283 character statement with two numbered clauses, also prescribed word for word.
And the cosmetic warning
The cannabis topicals property quotes a 59 character statement from 21 CFR 740.10. Three properties, three prescribed sentences.
These six are the shortest of the set
Around 50 characters each except the balloon statement, which explains itself and is longer.
Which matters because the articles are small
A 50 character sentence on a package for a marble is a different layout problem from the same sentence on a wine bottle.
The section has prominence requirements for that reason
Described elsewhere in it, along with a requirement for warning symbols. Those are not quoted here.
And a symbol is an additional element
So the required mark is a sentence plus a symbol, not a sentence alone, which is more area again.
Our smallest container is 0.617 inches across
Which is a lip balm tube, and the available print area on it is a fraction of what a 50 character sentence plus a symbol needs.
Which is why the statement usually goes on secondary packaging
A carton or a card, rather than on the container. We sell primary containers.
And the capitalization is part of it
CHOKING HAZARD in capitals in five of the six. Capitals are wider than lowercase in almost every typeface, which makes the line longer than the character count suggests.
Pick the sentence, then find the area
Which is the order, and the six options are the first decision.
