Ten fields and what they distinguish
On this page11
Ten specification labels appear across this shelf
Capacity, color, material, temperature range, case pack, height, neck finish, recyclable, width and liner. Which looks like a well described shelf until the distinct values are counted.
Four of the ten are on every row
Capacity with 29 distinct values, color with 9, material with 3 and temperature range with 3. All 238 containers carry all four.
And the temperature range field takes exactly three values on this shelf
117 PET rows read minus 40 to 120 F. 71 polypropylene rows read 0 to 240 F. 50 glass rows read minus 100 to 300 F. A one to one mapping onto the material.
So on this shelf it tells a buyer nothing the material field did not
Filtering on temperature range is filtering on material under another name. Which is worth knowing before building a search around it.
Across the whole catalog that is not true
The field takes nine distinct values across 2,150 products. So it is a genuine specification in general and a restatement here, and which of those it is depends on which shelf you are standing on.
Three fields carry real discrimination
Case pack with 82 distinct values on 237 rows. Height with 146 values on 224 rows. Neck finish with 21 values on 222 rows. Those three are doing the work.
Two fields are nearly absent
Width appears on 14 rows of 238 and takes 11 values. Liner appears on one row and takes one value. Neither can be used to narrow a shelf because almost nothing carries them.
And a nearly absent field fails differently from an uninformative one
A filter on width silently drops 224 rows. A filter on temperature range keeps everything and tells you nothing. The first looks like a narrow shelf and the second looks like a successful search.
Which is the point of counting values rather than rows
Coverage says how many rows have an answer. Distinct values say whether the answer separates anything. A field needs both to be useful and these ten divide into three groups on exactly that test.
The tenth field is the interesting one and it gets its own page
Recyclable, on 117 of 238 rows, with exactly one value.
