Water

On this page11
Water weighs about 8.3 pounds a gallon. That decides the container more than anything else.

The quantity is the hard part

Household emergency water is measured in gallons per person per day, which becomes a lot of gallons quickly. This is a volume problem before it is a container problem.

And this shelf is thin at volume

43 containers over a litre and 21 over a gallon. For a household supply that is a small set.

Weight decides the format

A five gallon container of water is around forty pounds and most people cannot carry it far. Several smaller containers beat one large one for anything that might need moving.

Which is an argument for the F style bottle

9 PE F style bottles here. Square in plan, flat sided, stackable, with a handle moulded in on many, and it is the traditional shape for carried liquid.

Stackable matters more than it sounds

Water storage is a space problem in a house. Round containers waste the gaps and square ones do not, and over fifty gallons that is a cupboard.

Light grows things

Water stored in a clear container in daylight grows algae. Opaque or dark storage is the simple answer and 66 white containers here do it.

Polyethylene is the material

65 HDPE containers. Tough, light, non-reactive for water, and it does not shatter when a shelf collapses, which is the scenario the water is for.

And PET is the compromise

153 PET containers, thinner and clearer. Fine for rotated water and the reason to rotate it rather than trust it for years.

Rotate rather than preserve

Stored tap water refreshed on a schedule avoids nearly every question this page could raise. The container only has to last between rotations.

Treatment is not a packaging question

What to add to stored water, and whether to, is EPA and public health guidance. Nothing on a container page should be read as advice about it.

The Davis Pack Supply catalog, measured 19 October 2026. The emergency food and water shelf is 632 rows: 287 containers and 345 closures. 5 mL to 7,571 mL with a median of 237; 43 containers over a litre, 21 over a gallon, and none over three gallons. 153 PET, 65 HDPE, 45 glass, 24 PP. 210 jars, 59 bottles, 9 jugs, 8 tubs and pails, 1 tube. 93 clear, 66 white, 39 amber, 28 black, 24 natural. Closures: 283 continuous thread, 22 dome lids, 9 liners and sealing discs, 6 specialty, 5 flip top, 5 phenolic, 5 round tubs, 3 tub and pail lids.
The archetype behind this shelf is store-bulk-home: 950 to 8,000 mL, wide mouth, gasketed, PET and glass and HDPE, cold, solid, chunky, scooped, with "home pantry, wide mouth, gasketed, and it sits on a counter so it is seen" as its stated reason. It describes a kitchen canister rather than a long-term store, and the shelf sits mostly below even that window.
Written from 21 CFR 177.1520 and 21 CFR 177.1630, and from the catalog as it stood on 19 October 2026. We do not hold food-contact compliance documentation for any product and do not describe anything here as food grade; that is a statement from a manufacturer about a specific resin and its additives. No shelf life, water treatment or seed viability figures appear anywhere in this property, because none of them are a packaging question.
