The five-point scale
On this page13
What the ratings are
Five attributes on a five-point scale, published per material class: Chemical Resistance, Clarity, Impact Resistance, Rigidity and Scratch Resistance. Ten material classes are rated.
The two on this shelf
Glass is Chemical Resistance 5, Clarity 5, Rigidity 5, Scratch Resistance 5 and Impact Resistance 1. Polypropylene is Chemical Resistance 4, Clarity 5, Rigidity 5, Scratch Resistance 5 and Impact Resistance 4.
The interesting number is glass at 1
Impact Resistance 1 of 5, which is the only low rating in either set. Glass is the inert choice and the breakable one, and the scale says so.
And polypropylene at 4 for chemistry
Good rather than high. Which is accurate and is not a statement about any particular drug.
Per material class, not per product
The rating attaches to PP or to Glass, not to a specific jar. Two polypropylene jars from different molders have the same published rating.
Which is the limit to understand
A resin family rating cannot distinguish additives, colorants, mold release or regrind content, and those are exactly where leachables come from.
So a 4 out of 5 is a starting point
It says polypropylene is generally resistant. It does not say your formulation will not sorb into it, which is the absorptive question.
Use it to eliminate, not to select
A material rated low for the property you care about is out. A material rated high is a candidate for a study.
Clarity is rated 5 for both
Which is useful for a different reason: a compounded preparation often needs to be inspected, and 26 of the 106 containers here are clear.
Ten material classes are rated in all
Which covers the catalog rather than this shelf, and only two of them turn up here. A property on a different shelf has more materials to weigh and the same five attributes to weigh them on.
And none of the five attributes is a barrier property
No oxygen or moisture transmission figure, which for a preparation with a shelf life is the number a packaging engineer would reach for first. We publish the liner instead and leave the barrier question open.
And nothing in the scale addresses sterility
Which is paragraph (c) and is its own page. No rating substitutes for a sterile container.
