The sharp half and the blunt half
On this page11
Eight of the eighteen leaves have a point on them
Fly hooks, circle hooks, treble hooks, jig heads, and the baited hook leaves. All of them are designed to catch on something, which is exactly what a hand reaching into a jar is.
And a treble hook is the extreme case
Three points on one shank, so it cannot be picked up without presenting a point in some direction. A loose pile of trebles tangles with itself and has to be separated one at a time.
Which changes what the container has to do
A wide shallow container that can be tipped out onto a surface beats a deep one that has to be reached into. The hand never goes in.
The shelf is well supplied for that
Of the 251 containers, the median height is 2.5 inches and the median diameter 2.87, so the typical row here is already wider than it is tall. A hundred and twenty eight of the 219 that record both dimensions are wider than tall.
The blunt half of the group has the opposite preference
Swivels, split rings, leader rings, crimp sleeves, bobber stops and beads are safe to pick from and small enough that a narrow jar wastes less space. The hand can go in.
And they are the leaves where a clear wall earns most
A snap swivel and a barrel swivel of the same size look alike in a jar and different through the side of one. Ninety one of the 251 containers are clear, which is the largest single color.
Hooks also rust, which the blunt hardware mostly does not
A carbon steel hook left in a jar with any moisture in it will show rust at the point first, which is the part that matters. Swivels and rings are usually plated or stainless.
So the group divides on two axes at once and they do not line up
Sharp against blunt, and corrodible against not. A treble hook is both sharp and corrodible; a split ring is neither; a jig head is sharp and painted.
Which is why eighteen leaves need more than one container
Not because of the count but because of the combinations. Four distinct storage situations across eighteen leaves, and the shelf has an answer for each.
And none of them is a question this spine addresses
The Lacey Act concerns trade in fish, wildlife and plants taken in violation of other law. A hook is manufactured hardware and nothing on these pages says otherwise.
