The jar without the lid
On this page13
What home canning needs
A two-piece lid: a flat lid carrying a sealing compound, and a separate screw band that holds it during processing and comes off afterwards.
Why two pieces
Because the seal is made by vacuum rather than by the band. The band is a clamp during the process and the lid holds itself down once the jar cools.
Which is why it cannot be substituted
A continuous thread lid screwed down tight is held by the thread. It does not form a vacuum seal and it does not release during processing.
And there is not one in this catalog
183 closures indexed to this group: 131 continuous thread polypropylene lids, 27 metal or aluminum CT caps, 12 dome lids, 11 metal lug or twist caps, 1 sealing disc, 1 metal overshell lid.
Checked catalog-wide as well
There is no two-piece canning lid and no band anywhere in the catalog, not only not on this shelf.
While the jar is here
8 glass mason and paragon jars out of 20 containers. The jar that the whole craft is named after, with nothing to close it for that purpose.
Which is the sharpest single-article gap in this library
Not a routing failure and not a data gap. One article, absent, and it is the article the central leaf is defined by.
The 11 metal lug or twist caps are the nearest thing
A lug cap on a glass jar does form a vacuum seal, which is how commercial preserves are packed. It is not a home canning lid and it is a different process.
So one leaf of eight cannot be served
Home canning. The other seven are fermenting, pickling, dehydrated storage, freezer portion, kombucha, sourdough starter and yogurt.
And several of those are well served
A fermenting crock wants a wide mouth glass jar, and this shelf is 19 glass containers with necks at 63TW, 70-400, 70TW and 89-400.
183 closures for 20 containers is the most lopsided ratio here
Better than nine to one, and the depth is in plain lids rather than in functions.
Which is the pattern worth naming
A large closure count is not a wide closure range. 131 of the 183 are the same plain lid.
