No canning lid, anywhere
On this page13
What is here
131 continuous thread polypropylene lids, 27 metal or aluminum CT caps, 12 dome lids, 11 metal lug or twist caps, 1 sealing disc, 1 metal overshell lid. 183 in total.
And what a two-piece lid is
A flat metal lid with a sealing compound round its rim, plus a separate screw band. Two articles that work together and are bought together.
Neither is in this catalog
No flat canning lid and no band, checked catalog-wide rather than against this shelf.
While 8 of the 20 containers are mason and paragon jars
Which is the jar the format was built around. The jar is stocked and its closure is not.
A continuous thread lid is not a substitute
It seals by thread compression and holds whatever pressure the jar builds. A canning lid is held by vacuum and has to vent during processing.
So the substitution is not merely imperfect
It is the wrong mechanism. Which is the same shape of finding as the beer property, where a threaded closure cannot hold carbonation.
The 11 metal lug or twist caps are the nearest article
A lug cap does form a vacuum seal on a glass jar and is how commercial preserves are packed. It is a different process from home canning.
And it needs a matching finish
Our shelf has 5 containers at 63TW and 2 at 70TW, which are twist finishes that a lug cap fits. 7 of 20 containers.
So there is a commercial-style route on this shelf
A twist-finish glass jar and a metal lug cap, which is a coherent pairing for a preserve packed hot.
Just not the home canning route
Which is the leaf named in the group and the one with nothing to close it.
The fix is a purchase, not an index change
Flat canning lids and bands, in the common sizes. Nothing about the index is hiding them because they do not exist here.
Which puts this in the same category as the beer closures
A catalog-wide absence of a defining article, stated rather than worked around.
