Stain treatment

On this page9
It carries the same disclosure obligation as the gallon and almost none of the freight problem.

What it is

A pre-treatment sprayed onto a stain before washing. Small, specific, bought on a recommendation or on a claim, and used a little at a time.

The archetype

Cleaning spray, 350 to 1000 mL, narrow neck, PET or HDPE, with a trigger sprayer that locks and resists the contents.

The trigger is the product

A stain treatment is judged on whether it delivers where it is aimed, which is entirely the sprayer. The shelf carries 19 trigger sprayers and 34 fine mist sprayers, so there is a genuine choice between a stream and a mist.

Lockable matters more than it sounds

This is a product kept in a laundry room where children are, and it is sprayed rather than poured. A lockable trigger is both a safety feature and the thing that stops it leaking in a cupboard.

Chemical resistance of the sprayer

A solvent-bearing stain treatment attacks the sprayer’s dip tube and seals before it attacks the bottle. The bottle is the easy part of this decision.

Why it is the sensible first product

It ships, it sells at a real margin, the container choice is wide, and the compliance work is identical to the gallon. A maker learning this category learns it more cheaply here.

And the claim has to be specific

"Removes stains" competes with everything on the shelf. A named stain, a named fabric and an honest statement of what it will not shift is the kind of claim a small producer can make and a large one will not.

Label area is comfortable here

A 500 mL spray bottle has a real front panel. The complete ingredient list, the toll-free number and the website address all fit without fighting the product name, which is not true at the small end.

California Health and Safety Code 108954, the label disclosure. The manufacturer discloses under one of two options, and in either case discloses "the manufacturer's toll-free telephone number and Internet Web site address on the designated product label"; where the label does not carry a complete ingredient list it carries the address of a website that provides the required information, and a toll-free number. codes.findlaw.com
