Which half you are in
On this page8
The bulk half
Laundry detergent, fabric softener, laundry powder and scent booster. Bought by the season, heavy, cheap per use, and sold on value. The container is a jug or a tub and the customer judges it by whether it pours without spilling.
The small half
Stain treatment and wool dryer spray. Bought on impulse or on recommendation, light, expensive per use, and sold on a specific claim. The container is a sprayer and the customer judges it by how it looks on a shelf.
They do not share a buyer journey
Nobody browses for a gallon of detergent the way they browse for a stain treatment. One is a restock and the other is a purchase, which changes the photography, the copy and the size you lead with.
And they do not share a freight profile
A gallon of liquid is about eight and a half pounds before the container. Shipping it to a consumer rarely works, which is why the bulk half is a local, wholesale or pickup business far more often than the small half.
Which is why a lot of small makers start small
A stain treatment at 350 to 1000 mL ships, sells at a real margin, and carries exactly the same disclosure obligation as the gallon. The compliance work is the same; the logistics are not.
The concentrate is the third option
A concentrate moves the water out of the freight and lets a small container do the job of a large one. It also changes the free alkali calculation, usually upward, so it is a compliance decision as much as a shipping one.
You can do both, but not with one label
The panel area of a gallon jug and of a 120 mL sprayer are different enough that the artwork has to be redrawn rather than scaled. Plan for two layouts from the start if the range will span both halves.
