Ingredient disclosure

The website

On this page9
You have to run a website, in an electronically readable format, and keep it true.

The requirement

The manufacturer posts on its website, in an electronically readable format, information related to the designated product including a list of each intentionally added ingredient it contains.

"Electronically readable" is doing work

A photograph of a label is not an electronically readable list. The point is that the information can be read by software, which means real text, structured sensibly, on a page that loads.

What else the list is reported to carry

Secondary sources consistently describe the website list as carrying nonfunctional constituents present at 0.01 percent or above, a CAS number for every listed chemical, and the functional purpose of each intentionally added ingredient. Those four requirements are not quoted here from the statute and should be confirmed.

The CAS number is the part that takes time

Every chemical, identified by its Chemical Abstracts Service number. For a product with twenty ingredients that is twenty lookups, and they have to be right, because a CAS number is machine-checkable in a way a name is not.

Functional purpose is a sentence per ingredient

What each one is there to do. Surfactant, builder, enzyme, preservative, fragrance, pH adjuster. It is the most useful part of the disclosure for an ordinary reader and the part most likely to be written once and never reviewed.

Per product, not per brand

Six products is six ingredient pages. A single page listing everything the company uses does not tell a buyer what is in the bottle in their hand.

And it has to track reformulation

The label is fixed at print. The website is expected to be current. When a formula changes, the site changes before the new batch ships, and the old formula has to stay available while old stock is still on shelves.

Build it as data, not as a page

Hold the ingredient list, the CAS numbers and the functional purposes in a file or a table and render the page from it. A hand-written page for each product drifts from the batch sheet within a year, and the drift is invisible until somebody checks.
