Methyl alcohol
Liquid containing 4 percent or more by weight of methyl alcohol. Four percent is not much, and methanol turns up in shellac thinners and in denatured alcohol blends.
Turpentine
Liquid containing 10 percent or more by weight of turpentine. Relevant to traditional varnishes and to wax finishes thinned the old way.
Ethylene glycol
Liquid containing 10 percent or more by weight of ethylene glycol.
The solvent entry
Liquid solvents containing 10 percent or more by weight of benzene, toluene, xylene, petroleum distillates or combinations of them, where the viscosity is under 100 Saybolt universal seconds at 100F. Two conditions, and both have to be met.
The low-viscosity hydrocarbon entries
Nonemulsion liquids containing 10 percent or more hydrocarbons by weight under the same viscosity test. Spray devices are excluded, and so are products in which the liquid cannot flow freely, paint markers being the example given.
Glue removers
A remover containing more than 500 mg of acetonitrile in a single container. Note that this one is a quantity per container rather than a concentration, so the package size is part of the test.
Which is the point worth carrying away
One of these entries depends on how much is in the container rather than what is in it. Offering the same formula in a larger size can create an obligation that the smaller size did not have.
Read the formula, not the category
There is no entry for "wood glue" or for "varnish". The determination is made against what is actually in the product at what weight percentage, which means two products on the same shelf can land differently.
