Labels on a bottle that gets wet

Updated

On this page6

A cleaning product label lives under a sink, gets sprayed with its own contents, and is handled with wet hands.

A wet, chemical environment

Water, the product itself, and whatever the customer is cleaning with it.

A paper label that would be fine on a dry goods bottle curls, stains and lifts within weeks.

And a label that becomes illegible has taken the safety information with it, which is a compliance problem and not only a cosmetic one.

Stock and adhesive

Synthetic stock rather than paper: polypropylene or polyethylene film, which is dimensionally stable when wet.

A laminate or a varnish over the print, so the ink survives abrasion and solvent.

An adhesive rated for the bottle's resin and for wet conditions. Polyethylene and polypropylene are low-energy surfaces, and general-purpose adhesives lift from them.

Ask the printer specifically for a chemical-resistant construction, and tell them what the product is.

The surface

Clean and dry at application, with no product film from filling. A drip down the shoulder is exactly where the label edge will lift.

Some bottles are surface-treated to accept printing and adhesive, and an untreated one of the same resin behaves differently. Worth asking.

Placement

Clear of the fill line and clear of where the hand grips, which is where wear happens.

Front and back panels, because there is more mandatory content here than fits on one: identity, net quantity, name and address, cautionary labeling, directions, and for California an ingredient list.

And test by wearing one out: keep a labeled bottle in actual use for a month and see what it looks like.

The surfaces you would be sticking to

Curvature and a low-energy surface both fight the adhesive.
